Registration issues

July 13th, 2008

I’ve received several emails in the past few days from folk registering.
After attempting to register myself in an effort to see what would greet them after doing so, I discovered that while the site sends out an email with a default password, this default password is not necessarily accepted as a log-in (i.e., the URL works as a log-in device).
However, if the new user clicks on the adjacent URL in the notification email, this takes he/she/it directly into their own admin area.
At this point, you can amend your profile, including providing yourself with a new password (regardless of the old), which then works as a log-in.
I’ve set the entry level for new users as ‘contributor’. This means that new users can produce posts, but these then have to be submitted for review prior to publication.
If you’ve done so, and want to ensure that publication occurs in a timely fashion, then I’d suggest you send an email reminder (using the contact details provided).
I’d like to cut out the middle man by providing direct author privileges but doing so would allow the unscrupulous to delete stuff I’d rather not see deleted.
I should also point out that it is necessary to register separately for each of the three blog oriented sites (including this one).
Given that the web is crawling not only with the curious and the interested but also with automated spambots, etc, I have to be a tiny bit cautious.
As an additional bit of information, it’s worth searching the net to find traces of anyone who does register. It’s surprising how often these registrations are the work of spambots.
For instance, one of my recent registrations uses the following email address: jacobkolp@gmail.com
To read more about this enterprising spambotter, go to http://cubelodyte.com/category/minor-details/
You won’t find these listed as spambots but they do like to register around the net and don’t generally comment: ioulytrter@gmail.com, jutyrtereyr@gmail.com, & sheshemal@gmail.com.

Leximancer, photos, etc

January 4th, 2008

I’ve added some additional information about Leximancer.
I’ve also added a link to a photo gallery with exactly one photo in it so far.
I’ve also changed the main site heading for the third time in recent weeks (from Peter Grimbeek’s website, to grimbeek.com.au website, to Peter Grimbeek online).

More tidying up

December 31st, 2007

I’ve added guides providing elementary information more generally about quantitative and qualitative issues, and more specifically about quantitative (MANOVA) and qualitative procedures (e.g., how to use Leximancer and NVivo to do text analysis).
I’ve also ensured that the links to guides are functional (I forgot to upload some of the guides previously).

Anticipating 2008

December 29th, 2007

I’ve returned to this website after some months, and have pruned it here and there. I’ve also added some new stuff.

One of the surprises is that three links to associated sites that functioned a year ago are now defunct. These sites have either relocated to escape the stream of visitors generated via this site or succumbed to rough Net seas (drowned in the net).

Best wishes for 2008.

Forum deleted

August 21st, 2007

I’ve removed the forum option from this website as it was only attracting Viagra advertisers and the like, and the PhP bulletin board software did not allow me to remove these “contributors” or even delete their posts.

If you do want to ask a question or make a comment related to research methods, including data analysis (quant or qual), I’d suggest you contact me directly (via the contact link embedded in the banner header to pages on the main site).

Post on MANOVA in stats blog

February 26th, 2007

I’ve added a reasonably detailed post on reporting MANOVA output for SPSS.

More stuff

February 16th, 2007

I’ve added another page to the main site, Guides, with what is hopefully the beginning of a set of how-to-do guides related to various statistical endeavours.

I’ve updated the drop-down menu and re-arranged the order of elements - this took most of the time.

Links and categories

January 22nd, 2007

I’ve made links consistent across site with exception of the forum site, which doesn’t seem to have a links option.

I’ve renamed forums on the forum site as quant, qual, and other.

I’ve used these same labels as categories for the stats & methods blog.

Initial site note

January 18th, 2007

Today I’ve incorporated two additional modules to the site together with the relevant links.

Now, one module caters purely for statistical and methodological posts and comments.

Another caters purely for personal posts, etc.

The third, this one, allows me to document these incremental changes.
